PENSFORD BELL FOUNDRY · SINCE 1791

Two centuries of bells, cast in the same valley.

Six moments that shaped the foundry, from a pewterer's back yard to one of three working bell foundries left in the country.

1791

First pour on Mill Lane

A pewterer's yard on Mill Lane casts its first bell, a 4 cwt treble for Hollowcombe church. The loam mould is dried over a peat fire for three days.

1864

Tuned on a lathe

We buy a vertical tuning lathe and stop tuning by chipping at the lip. Bells now leave the yard true to within a few cents.

1921

The memorial rings

Eleven rings cast in four years for towns marking their war dead. Still the busiest spell in the foundry's history.

1978

Bought by the workforce

When the family line ends, fourteen moulders and tuners buy the business between them and keep the furnace lit.

2009

A new furnace, the same sand

A cleaner gas furnace replaces the coke hearth. Moulds are still made from loam dug a mile up the valley.

2026

Still casting

Around forty new bells a year, plus rehanging and restoration work for towers across the south west.
