QUILLAN & HART · RESTORATION

Nethercote House, before and after.

We took the house back to lime, oak and flagstone one room at a time, while the family lived in the other half. Every pair below was shot from the same tripod mark, so drag across each one to see what was there when we arrived.

Kitchen and flagstone floor

Eleven weeks · floor, walls, range alcove
Two layers of vinyl came up to find the original blue lias flags underneath. We relaid forty of them on a lime bed, matched the missing ones from a farm sale and limewashed the walls in three coats.

Front parlour and inglenook

Seven weeks · fireplace, beam, plaster
The 1970s gas fire came out and the inglenook came back. The bressummer beam had rotted at one end, so we spliced in green oak rather than replace it.

Main stair

Five weeks · treads, balusters, handrail
Eleven treads replaced in reclaimed elm and every baluster stripped by hand. The handrail is the original, taken off, reglued and put back.
Three more rooms, the full schedule of works and the lime mixes we used are in the project write-up.
