NEW Footer copyright line for Breakdance

A copyright line that updates itself

Copyright Year writes the copyright line for your footer and changes the year for you every January. Add a start year for a range, a company details line, legal links and a website credit, then lay it out inline, stacked or split.

Four footer lines, one element

Each bar below is a single Copyright Year element. The years are worked out when the page loads, so they are right today and will still be right next year.

Inline

The standard line, with a year range

Company name, a custom start year of 2015 and the default rights text. Alignment is set to centre. The end of the range is always the current year.

Split

Copyright on the left, links and credit on the right

The Split layout on a dark footer bar. The privacy link comes from the page set in Settings > Privacy, two more links are added by hand, and a website credit sits at the end. On tablets and phones the links move under the copyright line.

Stacked

With a company details line

The Stacked layout puts each part on its own line. This one uses the word Copyright with the symbol, the “to” range separator, and a Company Details line for the registered number and VAT number.

Custom format

Write the line your own way with tokens

Use Custom Format is switched on with the format {symbol} {years} {company}. Built in Yorkshire. {rights}. Company Name is left blank, so it uses the site title, and Start Year is set to the year of the first post.

How it works

Three steps to a footer you never edit again

Add it once to your footer template and leave it.

1

Add the element

Drop Copyright Year into your footer. With no settings at all it shows the symbol, this year, your site title and the rights text.

2

Add your details

Set a start year for a range, then add a company details line, legal links and a website credit if you need them.

3

Pick a layout

Choose Inline, Stacked or Split, set the alignment and colours, and you are done. The year looks after itself.

Features

Everything a footer line needs

The small things that usually mean a Code Block or a shortcode.

Always the current year

The year is worked out on the server each time the page is built, so there is nothing to change in January.

Right on cached pages

If a page cache is still serving a copy made last year, a small script moves the year forward in the browser. It never moves it back.

Year ranges

Type a start year, or use the year of your first post. Choose 2015–2026, 2015-2026 or 2015 to 2026.

Five symbol styles

The symbol, Copyright with the symbol, the word Copyright, (c), or nothing.

Legal links

Add as many links as you need, with a choice of separator. The privacy link can follow the page set in Settings > Privacy.

Company details line

A second line for the registered number, VAT number or registered office, with its own typography.

Website credit

An optional Website by line with a name, a link and a nofollow switch.

Custom format and tokens

Write the whole line yourself with {symbol}, {years}, {year}, {start_year}, {company}, {site_name} and {rights}.

Three layouts

Inline on one line, Stacked with each part on its own line, or Split with the links on the right.

Use cases

Where it helps

Any site with a footer, and most of all the ones you look after for other people.

01

Client sites

Hand over a site and never get the January email asking you to change the year.

02

Agency credit

Add a Website by line to every build, with or without a link.

03

UK limited companies

Show the registered number and office on a second line, as company websites must.

04

Shops

Put privacy, terms and refund links next to the copyright line.

05

Multilingual sites

The default texts are translatable, so the line follows the site language.

06

Starter templates

Leave Company Name blank and the same footer works on every site, using each site title.

Tips & FAQ

Good to know

Will the year change on its own?

Yes. The year is set on the server whenever the page is built. With Keep Year Current On Cached Pages on, a small script also updates it in the browser if a cache is still serving last year’s copy.

What happens when the start year is this year?

You see a single year, not a range. Next year it becomes a range on its own.

Which tokens can I use?

{year}, {years}, {start_year}, {company}, {site_name} and {symbol} work in any text on the element. The Format field also takes {rights}.

Where does the privacy link come from?

From the page set in Settings > Privacy in WordPress. Change it there and the footer follows. If you also add the same page by hand, it is only shown once.

Can the company name come from a custom field?

Yes. Company name, start year, the text fields, the format, the details line, link labels and the credit all accept dynamic data.

Does it work in Oxygen?

This version is for Breakdance.
